Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dental hygiene students¡¯ adaptation to college life on self-determination.
Methods: The subjects of this study were dental hygiene students in colleges located in Busan. The data were statistically analyzed with the SPSS 25.0 program using frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis.
Results: Adaptation to the college environment showed positive correlations with academic adaptation (r=.687, p<0.01), social adaptation (r=.582, p<0.01), individual-emotional adaptation (r=.410, p<0.01), and self-determination (r=.291, p<0.01). Among the adaptations to college life, academic adaptation (p<0.001), social adaptation (p<0.01), and individual-emotional adaptation (p<0.01) showed positive effects.
Conclusions: Programs at the departmental and college levels are needed to help dental hygiene students adapt successfully to college life and to improve their self-determination, which is the free will to decide their own academic and life choices.
